A nuanced look on China’s social credit system. While some of the reports in western media were exaggerated, the overall outlook to acutally implement a centralized Orwellian-like surveillance system is nevertheless grim. Currently, the internet is highly censored, cell phone numbers and online activity are assigned a unique ID number which is tied to a real person. The use of facial-recognition technology is also growing in China, which provides the means for a widespread tracking and surveillance of citizens.
