Ever wondered how much it woud cost to add spy chips on a server motherboard? It can be as litte as $200. Of course, you need access to the hardware to do this. This comes after the Bloomber Businessweek bombshell article from last year, claiming Supermicro motherboards were bugged with tiny chips from Chinese hackers. This was dismissed as a false alarm and the Defcon hacker conference awarded it two Pwnie Awards, on for the “most overhyped bug” and one for the “most epic fail.” There was no follow-up reporting that could affirm this claim.
But now security researcher Monta Elkins will show at CS3sthlm how he created a proof-of-concept version of that hardware hack in his basement.
