Google has reached “Quantum Supremacy”

Google has now officially made its proof of the so-called Quantum Supremacy public by publishing an article in Nature. According to Sundar Pichai on the company’s blog “We’ve shown that our newest quantum processor Sycamore with 53 qubits can perform a calculation within seconds that would take thousands of years even for the strongest supercomputers of our time”

This is truly a milestone, confirms Professor Frank Wilhelm-Mauch. He is professor of Quantum and Solid State Theory at the University of Saarland and coordinator of the OpenSuperQ project. The goal of the project is to construct its own quantum computer with 100 qubits by 2021. The so-called Quantum Supremacy Proof has used Google’s new Sycamore chip with a total of 54 qubits.

The application itself is considered highly academic and it is explicitly tailored to the strengths of a quantum computer. In the case described by Google, an algorithm took random on-chip one and two-qubit gates and processed a given constant as the input value. This process was repeated millions of times over a period of 200 seconds. The output results prove to be so complex that you can not find a shortcut to the calculation method on a classic computer, according to Wilhelm-Mauch.

However, this success must not hide the fact that we are still years away from using universal quantum computers for practical applications, Pichai admits. His technical director Hartmut Neven points out that today’s Quantum Supremacy marks only the beginning of a technical journey. They will continue to develop the chip technology and stability of the qubits. At the same time Google pledges to support the community of quantum application developers with open-source tools to discover new applications for quantum computers of the future.
